>>12936free drivers without proprietary firmware?
nope.
youre going to have to install the proprietary drivers because novideo forces you to
or well, good luck figuring out novideos private key to sign your firmware after reverse engineering it kek
99% of the time the only difference between novideo drivers and free drivers will be freedom, if all you do is run X11 without KMS enabled or any of that fancy shit
you dont actually need to enable KMS, thats only for running graphical programs in a tty, like playing a video without starting X11 first, or running gayland. novideo cant do that.
in reality, only schizos like me will use a tty for that stuff, and you will just run X11 to play a video anyway.
the proprietary drivers will work on arch, but you have to install them manually since theyre not in the kernel.
pacman -S nvidia-dkms
and reboot, thats literally all you need.
>>12937is it kepler (gtx 780ti family) or older?
then itll work just fine, and in fact, better than with proprietary drivers.
a 780ti is considered the holy grail of freetard gpus because its the last novideo card that completely works at full speed without performance hits, without any proprietary firmware or drivers
as well as the (probably) most powerful (and easiest to find) desktop card youll get, aside from integrated intel shit in old laptops
yes, some 2016-2018 AMD cards will kinda work, but they need driver hackarounds or they might not have working 3d.
that means using ati drivers and having crappier performance than normally (might be better than a 780ti, but also more expensive, and more power draw), plus some broken things such as suspending your machine, GPU brightness control, and issues with CRTs.
thats because ati drivers arent made for those cards, theyre made for 20 year old ATI gpus.
amdgpu/radeon drivers need proprietary firmware to do 3d as well, so no, amd drivers are NOT 'free', this is how open sores lies to you.
it tricks people into buying garbage hardware for "freedom" just to find out that the proprietary shitware is shoved from the driver into firmware blobs, but in the end youll still run proprietary firmware and a ""free"" driver
all the driver does is talk to the gpu and load the firmware onto the gpu.
if you want freedom, use an old intel gpu, or a 780ti.
