Is this a good laptop for schoolwork (just microsoft office & web browsing)? I'm on a tight budget and I need something that will fit on a small school desk.
I read on plebbit that it has full GNU/Linux support too.
Price is in US dollars.

>modern garbage
>yoga
not a real thinkpad
>soldered ram
OH NONONONO
>windows 11
you get zero compatibility, enjoy broken drivers and random keys on your keyboard not working at all for no reason, and not knowing how to fix that because everything is proprietary
>pentium
garbage
250$ for this hot steaming pile of shit?
just get an X200 at that point, if you can solder and dont mind a crappy CPU (since you get a pentium you probably dont mind) you can get an X200t (tablet), you just gotta desolder the BIOS chip if you wanna libreboot it, and theyre kind of rare.
>small school desk
an X200 is the smallest thing you can possibly find, its not much bigger than my hand.
if you lurk for a week or so youll find an X200 for <100$ on ebay, plus 50$ for some upgrades and the time/effort it takes to clean it up, upgrade it, libreboot it, etc...
and maybe throw in a new SSD if you need one, SATA SSDs got really cheap in the past few years.

 9778

Get a little more money and buy something that doesn't have a Pentium

Looks fine to me, though I have no idea what the fuck Lenovo were smoking when they thought this thing would be worth >$1000.
Pro tip if you're not installing Linux right away: enter '[email protected]' as the email when the W11 setup asks for your MS account, enter some random password, then you'll be able to make a regular local account.

>Thinkpad X200

lmao, do tech vegans even?

 9784

>>9759
>yoga
Holy shit no that will break and also chinkshit Lenovo has problems
Consider HP if you’re going for the cheapest shit, maybe envy or pavilion. Pavilion is decent.

 9785

>>9760
why would random keys stop working? driver issues?

 9788

>>9782
>he needs an email to make an "account" on windows
HOLY SHIT are wintoddlers seriously this poor?
>hurr durr tech vegans
DDR3 is far more than enough if you don't play games newer than 2016, and core 2 duo CPUs are the last ones made by intel without backdoors, or well, with fully removable backdoors that is.
i5, i7, i-anything is backdoored to the brim with proprietary broken bullshit you dont need or want
8 gigs of ram are far more than enough, i can play all my gemmy games on it
that means hl1 with xash3d (plus all the other goldsrc games), gta3 with re3, doom with crispy-doom, minetest, my dreamcast games with flycast, and some other shit like arcade psx and n64 games.
you arent even doing anything you couldnt or didnt do in 2008, dont pretend like you simulate protein splitting and need a ton of computational power
if you DO need a ton of power and simulate protein splitting or run AI coal, get a server board and plug some GPUs into it, laptops are not meant for that.
>>9784
>HP
stands for horrible products, literally 100% of all HP hardware i worked with was total fucking garbage
>>9785
random bullshit and driver cancer, proprietary EC firmware being proprietary EC firmware, keys being mapped to non-standard scancodes (or not having scancodes at all unless you hack around with the EC firmware) and requiring "drivers" (literally a single command, wrapped into a proprietary .exe file) to work properly
under GNU you'd run ectool something something to fix that, and modern less-mainstream/non-flagship models this can be a pain in the ass to figure out because nobody else did it for you already
for GM45 you actually have to hack around a bit to make the mute key work, but youll find that on every wiki
tl;dr
ectool -w 0x03 -z 0x40
just make a systemd service for that,
cat /etc/systemd/system/mutekey.service [Unit]
Description=mutekey
After=suspend.target

[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ectool -w 0x03 -z 0x40

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
WantedBy=suspend.target
>inb4 muh soystemdick le bad
figure out openrc then, it uses bash scripts so good luck figuring out how to detect wakeup/sleep and all that, not my problem, if you use a shitty init system because you seem to know what youre doing, you should know how to work with it.

No I'm sorry, no such thing exists while also being good. Use Libre-office Free Office instead.

>Price is in US dollars.

Just get an old thinkpad for for like 20/30 dollars dude, it's not like office programs are graphically intense programs to run like a VM or Kdenlife is.

>le backdoors

>it can play games that are old enough to drink!
Cool, now join a video meeting with an entire class's worth of people (hint: it's not going to be very fun without hardware video decoding)

That's still ignoring the elephant in the room of playing russian roulette with 15-year old hardware, not to mention needing to track down the 9-cell battery if you want decent battery life.

 9827

>>9802
>office
emacs is literally all you need and it runs on a single core cpu from 1990
also you gotta lurk for a few weeks to find a thinkpad for 20-30$, or buy something with a locked bios password and get rid of it (check wiki.installgentoo.com, i think there was a section about how to do that, you just have to short a chip while fucking with the bios, but youll flash libreboot anyway)
what i do (and what you should do if you can), is to buy a bunch of busted thinkpads "for parts", for 20$ each, then put together 3 working ones from lets say 4 busted ones, and still have some spare parts left over for repairs.

>muh gaymes
this is literally the only argument wintoddlers and modern-hardware faggots have, and it gets BTFOd by the fact that all modern games are shit
go play GTA3, HL1, DOOM, quake, or literally any dreamcast game in existence
then theres minetest, 0ad, and all the other freetard shit, some of them are fun as well
>hurr durr nobody cares about backdoors i love to be hecking hecked by script kiddos who just figured out how the IME works
tell me your full legal name, address, passwords, all your login data, etc... then and show me every single file on your hard drive, oh and give me ssh access while youre at it.
>muh meetings muh hardware decoding
you DO have hardware acceleration if youre not retarded and know how to enable it in firefuck because for some fucking reason its disabled on GNU by default, i just enabled a bunch of flags and made it (as well as vsync without a compositor) work, but forgot what exactly i did, maybe ill sum it up some day and post it here if i feel like it
>but muh video meetings
most thinkpads dont even have webcams, take your fucking meds
if you cared about privacy or freedom just the slightest bit you wouldnt even consider joining those gay meetings in the first place, or at least not with a webcam on.
(i can confirm it works with 20 people in a meeting doe, as long as youre not screen recording and playing GTA 3 at the same time while in a call)

lol, now you get microshafts malware PLUS some russian 'crack' malware on top of it, this is the absolute state of proprietary software.

I am not even using windows, just making windows less harmful (ghost specter doesn't require a microsoft account for example)
anyways thank god I don't live in america, never needed windows for anything in my country, our computer exams just tell us to open Excel from the start menu and give us 20/20, so I never needed to replace my BSD installation

 9841

>>9833
>implying you can make it ""less harmful"" by kicking out random DLLs and telling it "please stop spying on me"
>implying that will do shit and it wont just go and spy on you anyway
>B-BUT
you have no source code, you cant compile your own kernel, you cant audit SHIT, you have no idea whats going on, and in reality you have zero control over anything thats happening behind the scenes.
you will never be a real operating system.
>doesnt require a microshaft account
what the fuck, is this the ""new normal"" or something now?
i honestly dont understand how wintoddlers can still cope with this utter garbage, logging in with a hecking microshaft account takes more time than installig GNU and getting used to it.
>BSD
ah yes, the average windows-meme-mod shill's operating system, the same shit its devs only run in VMs on macbooks because its such a great operating system!

>implying that will do shit and it wont just go and spy on you anyway
I didn't though, I just said it will not require an account, doesn't that mean it is less harmful?

meds, my BSD doesn't even run correctly under VMs: https://www.dragonflybsd.org/docs/docs/howtos/kvmguest/

How are you supposed to do heckin gaming on that? At the very least get something with Iris Xe Graphics so you can play some games that are two decades old or watch a modern mp4/webm video higher than 720p without it choking.

and in reality theyll just create an unique tracking id, so its the same thing as making a throwaway account with fake info.
>bsd doesnt even run correctly in vms
freeBSD apparently runs on a macbook pro under macOS, that george something dude who wrote the freeBSD network stack uses a fagbook with freeBSD in a vm as daily driver, yet tells everyone to run freeBSD...
>>9942
>muh gaymes
i dunno but my games all work on my X200 without any problems, at 60 constant fps without framedrops
and before you ask, yes, gta 3 is running with re3, a free engine.
>muh modern webm/mp4 without choking
even my fucking T60 can play all my 4K movies, webm, mkv, mp4, etc...
if you think that this is some accomplishment, maybe its because you are used to non-functional garbage operating systems without proper hardware acceleration.
>>9945
proprietary scam, just get a real thinkpad (X200, T400, T500)

Should I buy ssd or hdd for my x200?

 9967

>>9960
if you are gonna encrypt it a fast HDD might as well be better, SSDs don't really benefit much more than good HDDs if you encrypt them because you dont get TRIM or any of that shit
SSDs are anti encryption, and after time it will fuck them up so you have to repartition if it gets slow, something something hackarounds to make r/w faster assuming you dont encrypt it or use the SSDs builtin encryption (which you dont because its backdoored wintoddler shit)
you CAN use TRIM but you shouldnt, since it exposes data unencrypted.
if you dont mind spending a few bucks more, you can get an SSD
it will be a bit faster than a HDD but dont expect it to be magic, if its worth the price is your decision
the upsides are that you can beat your wife with your thinkpad all you want without risking data loss, and that you dont have HDD spinning and clicking noises, as well as less power consumption since you dont need a motor.

 9969

>>9959
you couldve easily just asked your little brother/sister to record your voice for you or something

 9970

>>9967
I will buy a hdd. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=0WcrgvhO_mw
The first comment says you can extract data from hdd. Encryption will solve this issue?

 10021

>>9969
thing being i dont have a little brother or little sister, and who in his right mind would ask his younger brother/sister to say "nigger faggot" or something like that?
>>9970
average luke smith viewer iq lol
SSDs and HDDs are interacted with in almost the same way, but SSDs throw a bunch of extra hacks on top to improve performance and maximize its life span
that includes TRIM, if you want secure encryption you cant use TRIM.
if you encrypt it itll be a bit faster than a HDD, have a shorter life span than a HDD assuming you always take good care of it and never bump or drop it (which is kinda hard if you use a thinkpad and are like me, throwing it against the wall every week or so)
and an SSD might cost a bit more, but they got really cheep in the past few years
tl;dr just buy whats cheaper, or buy an ssd if you want a minimal performance boost, and yes encryption will solve this problem, but you can't use TRIM
TRIM is disabled by default on basically all (sane) operating systems with encryption, at least with LUKS its like that, and you have to enable it manually.
i cant say much about meme operating systems like winkike or ubuntu, they might sacrifice performance for security and not even tell you, but gentoo, parabola, arch, etc... where you choose yourself, all default to disabling TRIM.

You're the one bringing up games as a performance metric, not me. Did you not read my post?
>you DO have hardware acceleration
The GMA 4500MHD in your beloved Thinkpad doesn't do anything newer than MPEG-2, I'm 99% sure most video meeting software uses at least H264 or VP8/9.
>it works as long as you're not screen recording
Like you might need to do if you're sharing a presentation in an online class?
>>9942
The UHD Graphics 605 can basically handle any encoding except for AV1, which isn't used much yet anyway. Still a million times better than whatever comes in the X200.

 10044

>>10030
i dunno but x264 works at 4K without any trouble, and x265 works on 1080p without any dropped frames
...at least in mpv with --vo=gpu-next, i dont know about your proprietary poorly engineered garbage with shitty performance
i dont even know if i have hardware acceleration for x264, but for vp9 i absolutely dont, yet i can record webms just fine, for some reason it actually performs BETTER than x264 when i screen record.
>sharing a presentation
then you minimize the hecking meeting and dont play video games at the same time
>durr hurr actually something something overpriced cope
i bet your hardware acceleration performs shittier than my software video playback anyway kek
